Downspout flushing: where the water has to go
A clean trough still overflows if the downspout is blocked. Flushing tests and clears the path water takes from roof to ground.

Why the downspout is the bottleneck
Acorns, twigs and wads of wet leaf matter wash toward the outlet and lodge at the first elbow. Once one acorn bridges the opening, everything behind it stacks up. The gutter looks fine from the driveway, yet a heavy afternoon storm sends water over the edge within minutes.
Maitland sits in the Orlando-area wet season from roughly late May to mid-October by NWS median dates. Those are the months when a partly blocked downspout gets tested daily, and when homeowners tend to notice it for the first time.
What flushing involves
We run water down from the top, check that it exits cleanly at the bottom, and clear any plug we find with a hose or a plumber's-style tool. If a downspout empties into a buried line, the test shows whether the connection still carries water away from the house.
Not every home is set up the same way. Some downspouts end at a splash block, some at an extension, and some tie into an underground drain. We will tell you which you have and whether the discharge point is sending water toward or away from the foundation.
Lakes, low ground and where the water lands
Water is almost 18 percent of Maitland's area, according to the city's encyclopedic profile, and lake-adjacent lots often drain toward the shoreline. The city's flood code addresses lakes, canals, streams and drainage courses, and its engineering manual covers stormwater runoff.
For a homeowner the practical point is simple: roof water should leave the downspout and travel away from the slab, not pool beside it. Street-side storm drains are a separate matter. Orange County takes reports of clogged storm drains and debris blocking drainage structures, so a blocked street inlet is a county or city call, not a roof job.
